Planning - Photo Shoot Poses

I have looked at some photo shoots of celebrities by the photographer Terry Richardson. I used his style for inspiration because his photo shoots are known for their eccentric and sometimes controversial poses. So I think a photography style similar to Terry Richardson's would suit my magazine because it will appeal to my younger audience because he uses themes like sex, humour and fashion.

Press Release

IPC Media’s Inspire division is producing a new mainstream music magazine, GOODMUSIC.  It is a magazine similar to NME, also produced by IPC Media, but this magazine is different in the way that it is aimed at young people around the age group of 15 – 25 and focussed mainly on music that is popular with this audience such as contemporary rock, hip hop, electronic music and mainstream popular music.

As well as information on gigs, album reviews and releases and up and coming artists, the magazine features a lot on the fashion, interests and culture of the younger generation, being the first music magazine on the market to cater to this age group as a whole.

The magazine will be available to download online, it will have a website for further information and loads of extra content and it will be interactive on sites such as; Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  This will help boost the magazine's buyers and subscribers because of people increasing use of the internet especially the young and it will ensure the magazine's contemporary reputation due to the multiple platforms it will cover and the way the magazine will continue to evolve it's use of different platforms as technology evolves.

Planning - Double Page Spread Interview Questions

What have you been up to recently?

Can you remember what sparked your passion for music?

Who have been your biggest influences and inspirations?

What moments in your career so far have stood out the most?

Were there ever times when you thought that you wouldn't have gone mainstream?

You are gathering quite a following in the US and across the world, how is the increasing international fame affecting your life?

What can you say about the rumours of you making your acting début?

Planning - Masthead Designs

Here I have experimented with a few different fonts, colours and tried using drop shadows on some of the designs. I decided to go for a red masthead to stand out and I didn't choose a font with serifs to make it seem more modern and attract a younger audience.
The 'GOODMUSIC' designs are what I will use for the front cover and the 'GM Magazine' designs will be at the top corner of the contents page.

Skills Development - Photoshop

To complete my magazine front cover I added the cover lines, a puff and a bar code.  With the cover lines, I placed a rectangle, coloured it then placed a text box over it, I found out that I could lock the layers of the rectangle and the text box in order to move them around the document simultaneously.

Skills Development - Photoshop

Once I was happy with my background and main image, I added a title. I got the text from dafont.com and I changed the colour of it in Photoshop.  I put the title behind the main image by changing the order of the layers. I also added strap lines and slug lines, by placing a text box.

Skills Development - Photoshop

I used Photoshop to produce the front cover of my magazine.  To start it off I changed the background colour. The first couple of layers I added where the main image, I placed the imaged where i wanted it and then duplicated the layer. I turned the second layer grey and put it behind the main image to give a shadow effect.

Definition of a Magazine

A magazine is a publication on information, stories and pictures which will appeal to a certain audience based on the specific genre of the magazine. Magazines are usually weekly or monthly but some specialist magazines can come every six months or yearly.

These magazine covers are attractive to me because of the celebrities on the cover, many magazines will put a celebrity on the cover to attract people to them because people may be interested in reading about that certain celebrity. Also I am attracted to the names of the magazine because when a magazine has a good reputation, you know that they will be good to read.

The advert I chose to analyse is Virgin Media's 'Bolt vs Blot' starring Usain Bolt.

Who created this message?
The message was created by Virgin and the advert was filmed by a separate filming agency called Blink.

What creative techniques are used to get my attention?
The main focus of this advert is Usain Bolt, pretty much everyone knows who he is and he is synonymous with being the fastest in the world. This grabs my attention because it is interesting to see celebrities in commercials especially one such as Bolt who is known for his extravagant personality. The fact that Bolt is running against a short, fat man, grabs our attention because it isn't a usual race that he would be running in which makes us curious about the advert, it also can be funny to see the comparison of Bolt and the man he is racing because they are so different and we know that Bolt will win.
The used music is a slow, simple tune which makes the advert seem more calm. Also the voice over is calm and he sounds like what he is commentating on isn't very exciting or challenging. Language techniques grab our attention for example when the voice over says 'Richard's turned up' it makes the advert seem relaxed because Richard Branson is the owner of the company which is a formal role so if the advert was more formal then he wouldn't just 'turn up'. These techniques give us the impression that the whole event is nothing to make a fuss about because Bolt can easily win the race. Which can be reflected in the message that the advert is giving, Virgin Media is easily faster than any other broadband and they are not really worried about the competition.
Sarcastic jokes are used a lot in this advert for example, when the voice over says 'Let's see which broadband is quicker, I wonder' this tells us that Virgin Media is easily superior to other broad bands.

How might different people understand this message differently to me?
People who don't know who Usain Bolt is may not understand the message because without knowing that he is the fastest in the world, they might not understand that the advert is saying that Virgin Media has the fastest broadband, although it is pretty clear.
Some people may find the advert to discriminate against short and obese people because it is basically saying that like short, fat people, other broad bands are a waste of time and effort and you should only bother with Virgin Media or tall and fit people.

What lifestyles and points of view are represented or omitted from this message?
The people in the advert who are using Virgin Media's broadband are a happy couple who are watching a film on the sofa together, which gives the impression that Virgin Media makes peoples lives more enjoyable. Whilst the teenage boy sitting on his bed using regular broadband looks bored and fed up with waiting for his internet to load, which tells us, if you're not with Virgin Media then your internet experience will be boring and dull.
The advert is aimed at people who have access to the internet and are fed up with their internet being slow so the makers of the advert wouldn't worry about appealing to people who don't use the internet.

Why is this message being sent?
The message is being sent to inform people that Virgin Media's fibre optic broadband is faster than any other regular broadband, which should encourage people to switch to using it instead of their current broadband.
My name is Tom Battell. I am very interested in the media and how it works which is why i chose to study the subject.
